If I had to sum up 2017 in one word, that would be – CHANGE. Last year brought some significant changes for me. The most notable change was working fulltime in my business. I went from a pretty secure, stable work environment where salary, benefits and all the perks were provided, to an environment where I had to make all that happen for me. That change brought about other changes, most notably in my schedule, budget, and relationships. The most challenging change was managing my mindset. I had to work through my fears, publicize my work and become vulnerable to criticism, and patiently await the rewards of my hard work. Along with those changes, I implemented a few changes in my diet and physical fitness routine.
What I learned from those changes —
I learned that nothing gets done unless I take action. I know that sounds really, simple, right? But there are many things (some call them enemies) out there that will stop our actions such as fear, procrastination, perfectionism, analysis paralysis, worry about others’ opinions, and the feeling of not being good enough. All these things keep us from acting. Nothing happens without actions, not your goals, not your passion, nothing.
My favorite quote from 2017 —
“We tend to complicate things to justify our own inactions,” Ben Kinney.
Someone put it like this – sometimes we get into a thinking loop like continuing to go around a roundabout by not choosing to get off in any direction. Decide to take a step, and the results of the action may dictate your next move. After all, a major part of life is learning from our trials and errors.
As I tell my coaching clients, do something towards your goals every day. The action breeds momentum, and if you have momentum, things get done. For 2018, make acting on your goals a priority.
